Associate Professor and Chair, Discipline of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology

Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology Discipline

Bio

Dr. James J. O’Donnell earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), a master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a PhD in Pharmacology from Rush University. His PhD work was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Hazel Lum, focusing on the regulation of inflammatory signaling by adherens junction protein p120 catenin in endothelial cells. He continued his training as a T32 postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine at University of Chicago and subsequently served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend. Dr. O’Donnell joined RFUMS as an Assistant Professor in 2016 and was appointed Chair of the Discipline of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology in 2026.

In addition to overseeing the pharmacology curriculum, Dr. O’Donnell teaches a wide variety of subjects within pharmacology at Chicago Medical School (CMS). He is currently co-course director of the Cardiovascular-Pulmonary-Renal (CPR) course in CMS. He also directs graduate courses such as Pharmacology Core, Advanced Molecular Pharmacology, and Seminars in Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology. In the past, he served as co-course director of the Medical Pharmacology course at CMS. He also was founding course director of Fundamentals of Pharmacology; Pharmacology I, II, and III; and Forensic Toxicology in the College of Pharmacy.

Dr. O’Donnell’s current scholarly interests include pharmacokinetics and toxicology, the latter with a particular focus on drug impairment and forensics. He is co-editor of the 4th and lead editor of the 5th edition of O’Donnell’s Drug Injury, and chief editor of Drug Discovery and Development, 3rd Edition.

Dr. O’Donnell served as President of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics-Great Lakes Chapter from 2023 to 2025. He is a member of the American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT), the American College of Clinical Pharmacology (ACCP), and the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET).
